Last year, John Hancock changed the way people think about life insurance with the John Hancock Vitality™ solution, an innovative approach to life insurance that rewards policyholders for the everyday things they do to stay healthy. This year, we’re taking the solution a step further with the introduction of the Vitality HealthyFood™ program, which encourages and rewards people for the smart food choices they make at the grocery store. Overwhelming evidence shows that a healthy diet can have a very real impact on your health and reduce the risks of many chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. In fact, unhealthy diets are among the biggest health challenges we face, leading to one in four deaths in the US (26%), or nearly 700,000 deaths each year. With highly processed foods available at every corner, prepared foods being purchased in record numbers, and portion sizes of restaurant meals ballooning (they’ve quadrupled since the 1950s – see figure below), we understand it can be difficult to make good choices when it comes to deciding what to eat.

So how does the HealthyFood program work? 

Based in behavioral economic theory, the HealthyFood program makes it easy to eat well by offering policyholders incentives to make healthy food purchases at the grocery store. Eligible members can receive a discount of as much as 25% on their qualifying healthy food purchases* for savings of up to $600 year at the grocery store. In addition, members are awarded two Vitality Points for each qualifying healthy food item they purchase (maximum of 50 points per month). The accumulation of  Vitality Points determines a member's Vitality Status. The more Vitality Points they earn the higher their Vitality Status and the greater their insurance premium savings and potential rewards and discounts.


John Hancock Vitality members also have access to nutrition courses, recipes and cooking tips. And, through John Hancock’s collaboration with the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, policyholders have free online access to the Tufts Health and Nutrition Letter, which provides valuable nutrition information to help drive healthier eating habits.
